Cambridge Historical Society & Museum Presentation
The Cambridge Historical Society and Museum are hosting a presentation presented by NYSOCC’s director where he’ll discuss restoring and preserving New York’s neglected and abandoned cemeteries. This will be a comprehensive lecture that will bring awareness for the tremendous need for cemetery conservation, how you can help and some of the amazing things that can happen when you restore a burial site.
Steele Meadows Cemetery Restoration
The Steele Meadows Cemetery is a wonderful little cemetery on the corner of Rt. 22 and Steele Road in Dresden, Washington County, New York. 6 stones are reported being here, though only 3 were found in the initial survey of the site. Restoration work will include low level brush cutting, ground probing for any lost stones, headstone cleaning and resetting of stones.
Cemetery Restoration
The Hurlburt Family Cemetery is a small 7 headstone cemetery located on private, residential land and contains descendants of one of the first families to settle in the area. This site has been well maintained by the property owners including the installation of a small fence. Work will include small site cleanup, ground probing, headstone repair with epoxy, as well as cleaning of all stones. This will be a great season starter and introduction for volunteers wanting to learn more about NYSOCC.
Washington County Historical Society Cronkite Lecture Series
Come and join the Washington County Historical Societies Cronkite Lecture Series where NYSOCC’s director will be discussing cemetery restorations in the Lower Lake Champlain area of Vermont and New York, as well as NYSOCC’s planned work for this summer.
